Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have officially roped in Gujarat wicketkeeper-batter Urvil Patel as a replacement for the injured Vansh Bedi, who has been ruled out of IPL 2025 with a ligament tear in his left ankle. The announcement was made by the IPL on May 5, confirming that Urvil joins CSK as a replacement player for his base price of INR 30 lakh.
InsideSport alluded to this four days ago too when Wasim Jaffer confirmed that Urvil Patel was attending trials at CSK. He has now become the third injury replacement signee for CSK after Ayush Mhatre replaced Ruturaj Gaikwad and Dewald Brevis replaced Gurjapneet Singh.
Who is Urvil Patel, the new CSK signee?
For those unfamiliar with him, Urvil Patel is one of the most explosive talents in Indian domestic cricket. The 26-year-old made headlines last year when he smashed a stunning 28-ball century against Tripura in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, equalling the record for the joint-fastest T20 century by an Indian. That knock came just days after he went unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Beyond that one innings, Urvil has built a solid resume in the domestic circuit. He has featured in 47 T20s, amassing 1162 runs at an extraordinary strike rate of 170.38, while also showcasing sharp skills behind the stumps. He was part of the Gujarat Titans squad in 2023, though he didn’t get any opportunity to make a mark.
That’s not it. The 26-year-old also holds the record for hitting a 41-ball century in a List-A match, making him the third-fastest Indian after Yusuf Pathan (40 balls) and Anmolpreet Singh (35 balls) to whack a hundred in the format.
