What should India’s batting order look like, against England? Wasim Jaffer picks top 4

Indian Test team is entering into its new era, with the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and R Ashwin, gone from the format. June 20 marks the starts of the new-look Team India, when they start their five-match Test series against England, and now the question looms, how would the batting line-up look like?

Yashasvi Jaiswal & KL Rahul to Open

Former India opener Wasim Jaffer, a batting legend in his own right, has carved out a rather perfect-sounding batting line-up for the England series. He not only picked the opening combo, but also the batting order of rest of the batters in the team. For him, Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul start at the top, no matter what.

“KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal have done well as openers in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. I feel KL should continue to open. Why change something that is not broken?” Jaffer told the Times of India. He then picked a new entrant at No. 3, which might not come as a surprise to many, given his strong performances.

Shubman Gill at No. 4

“Sai Sudharsan looks assured, and he should be given a longer rope at No. 3,” added Jaffer. “I guess Shubman could be the guy (to bat at No. 4). He opens in white-ball cricket, but in Test cricket, he needs to move down to 4,” Jaffer suggested. Having said that, what India needs to really do is, not tinker with the batting order a lot, which was the case in Australia, and caused a lot of problems there.

Rohit Sharma moved up and down, and so did KL Rahul and Shubman. Some stability is needed, so that the players also get the assurance to perform well.
