“Stop!”: ‘Champion’ ex-West Indies star fumes at Powell being replaced as T20I captain

Former West Indies cricketer Dwayne Bravo is unhappy with Rovman Powell being replaced as the T20I skipper. The CWI decided to name Shai Hope as the new skipper for the shortest format, replacing Powell who was at the helm of affairs since 2023. Under Powell, the Windies won 19 out of 37 T20Is that he had led them as captain.

Bravo unhappy with West Indies T20I captaincy change

Taking to social media platform Instagram, Bravo claimed that injustice was meted out to the West Indies cricketers after the decision to replace Powell. Dubbing it as the “worst decision ever,” the ex-WI all-rounder pointed out that Powell had managed to guide the team to the 3rd spot from 9th after taking over the reins as captain.

As a former player and a fan of WI cricket, this is easily one of the worst decisions ever. [Powell] taking over captaincy when our T20 team was in 9th spot and was able to move up to 3rd sport in the rankings and this is how you guys repay him. The bad treatment towards players when would it Stop!,” Bravo wrote.

Hope replaces Rovman Powell, who had been at the helm of affairs since May 2023. In 37 matches, he tasted success 19 times and ended up on the losing side 17 times, with a decent win% of 51.35.

Over Shai Hope’s appointment as the skipper, coach Daren Sammy said, “Hope’s appointment signals a progressive shift for West Indies cricket, given his success with the 50 over team in the last 18 months. As the team continues its evolution, Hope blends instinctive decision-making with analytical precision, using in-depth match data and player performance insights to shape strategy.”
