Steve Smith’s supreme form at Lord’s continues, shines yet again in WTC final

Australia cricket team batter Steve Smith slammed yet another half-century at the Lord’s, this time in the World Test Championship final against South Africa. The former Australian skipper, who happens to be the player with the most runs among the Aussies’ playing XI, played a sublime knock before he was dismissed by Marco Jansen. South Africa won the toss and decided to bowl first at Lord’s.

Since 2015, Smith has scored a double hundred, a century and three half-centuries at Lord’s. He is in fact the highest run-scorer among the rest of the Australian players in England. On Wednesday, he played a gritty 66-run knock off 112 deliveries before he was dismissed by Markram.

Coming in to bat at number 4, Smith first forget a 30-run partnership off 66 deliveries along with Labuschagne until the latter was sent packing. He then was involved in a 21-run partnership with Travis Head until the latter was sent back to the pavilion at the stroke of lunch.

Smith and Webster bounced back strongly post-lunch, stitching together a 79-run partnership. However, Jansen struck in the 42nd over as Smith attempted a drive and instead found Jansen at the slips, thanks to a thick edge of his willow. Jansen did not complete the catch in the first attempt but a juggle later, he managed to hold on to it.

Earlier in the contest, Temba Bavuma won the toss and opted to bowl first in the WTC final. Rabada struck twice to remove Khawaja and Green in the same over. Jansen then followed up by getting rid of Labuschagne and Head.
