Shubman Gill is the talk of the town. Ever since his appointment as the new Indian Test skipper, he’s earned huge praise. However, his close friend and teammate Abhishek Sharma hailing him as one of India’s finest across formats will come as the sweetest to Gill’s ear.
The Punjab duo, who rose through the age-group ranks together, share a close bond dating back to their days in junior cricket. Now, both of them are perceived as the present and future of Indian cricket!
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selected Gill as the player to replace Rohit Sharma as the new Indian Test skipper. With this, he becomes the fifth-youngest player to lead India in Tests and the 37th overall.
What did Abhishek say about Shubman Gill?
While speaking to StarSports, Abhishek Sharma didn’t hold back in stating that Gill is one of the best ever India has produced across all three formats. It is a big statement for someone who is just 25 years old. Regardless, deemed as the ‘Prince of Indian cricket’, Gill now has the roadmap to create his own script.
“I think if I see his career you know if I remember the old days when we were just started playing for the U-14 and U-16 Punjab team. As youngsters, we all started with the red ball, from that time to now, it is a big achievement to become India’s Test captain and I feel very proud of him,” said Abhishek in a video released by Star Sports.
The two cricketers go way back—to junior cricket in Punjab and India’s U-19 World Cup-winning side in 2018.
“Humne junior cricket saath dekha tha (We’ve watched and played junior cricket together.) He is one of the best players India has produced in all three formats, and wo acha isko nibhayega bhi (he will play his role to perfection). I believe he will do really well for Team India and as a captain as well,” added Abhishek.
Before his red-ball captaincy debut, Gill has a big task in the IPL. He’ll lead Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Eliminator against Mumbai Indians (MI) on May 30, aiming to guide them to their second title in three years.
