Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar reckoned that Shreyas Iyer did not get any credit for leading KKR to their third IPL title in 2024. His remarks come after Iyer created history by becoming the first captain in the history of IPL to guide three teams into the playoffs. Iyer and co. picked up their 8th win of IPL 2025 on Sunday after beating RR by 10 runs.
Gavaskar lauds Iyer’s captaincy
Speaking on Star Sports, Gavaskar pointed out that all the plaudits were given to someone else when KKR won the trophy. In fact, then mentor Gautam Gambhir was credited to the team lifting the IPL 2024 title while Shreyas was hardly given any praise. Gavaskar took an indirect jibe at Gambhir, noting that it was a captain who was responsible for what was happening in the middle and not “someone sitting in the dugout.”
“He didn’t get the credit for the IPL victory last season. All the plaudits were given to someone else. It’s the captain, who plays a major role in what’s happening in the middle and not someone sitting in the dugout,” Gavaskar said.
Further, Gavaskar claimed that Iyer was being given proper credit for his role as captain this year. He claimd that it wasn’t PBKS coach Ricky Ponting who was being praised instead of Shreyas.
“See, this year he’s getting fair credit. No one is giving all the credit to Ricky Ponting,” he added.
The 10-run win against RR made Shreyas a record holder of a fantastic feat that hasn’t been achieved by any other captain. Having previously guided Delhi Capitals (2019, 2020) and Kolkata Knight Riders (2024) to the knockouts, Iyer has now replicated the feat with Punjab Kings — a side that hadn’t made it to the playoffs since 2014.
