The Perth Scorchers hopes for redemption against the Melbourne Renegades have been dashed as the Big Bash League (BBL) decides not to reschedule the abandoned game in Geelong earlier this month.
The match at GMHBA Stadium on December 10 witnessed chaotic scenes, with the game called off after just 6.5 overs due to concerns about the pitch’s safety. Multiple Scorchers batters were hit by deliveries on the damaged pitch, prompting umpires to halt play.
In an official statement on Sunday, BBL authorities announced that the game would not be rescheduled, and both teams would be awarded one point each.

BBL investigating the matter
The decision comes amid an ongoing investigation into the circumstances leading to the match’s abandonment.
“The circumstances giving rise to the abandoned match remain the subject of an ongoing investigation. While various options to reschedule were explored, it became apparent rescheduling would be challenging due to a variety of factors, including the existing schedule across the two clubs, and limited access to venues,” stated the BBL.
The impact of this decision could be significant in a truncated BBL season, where each club’s total number of matches has been reduced from 14 to 10. The Perth Scorchers, who are vying for a record third consecutive BBL title, currently stand as favorites with two wins in as many matches post the abandonment.
The Melbourne Renegades, on the other hand, remain winless after a recent defeat to the Hobart Hurricanes on Saturday night. The league’s verdict adds a layer of complexity to the competition, emphasizing the challenges faced in navigating the compressed schedule of the ongoing BBL season.
