Last year at the Australian Open, Sania Mirza came tantalisingly close to winning the mixed doubles title with Rohan Bopanna, but fell at the final hurdle. Soon after that, she retired from tennis in February 2023. But finally Sania will be back at the Australian Open 2024, but with a slight twist.
Sania, who has moved away from the court, will now be a part of the commentary team for the competition with Sony TV, in Mumbai. “It (commentary) helps me stay in touch with the game (tennis) that has been my life,” Sania Mirza told RevSportz on Monday.
This is not the first time the Hyderabadi will be talking about the game, and had made TV appearances at Wimbledon, last year too. “She enjoys commentating,” said Imran Mirza, her father. “Sania understands the game well and since she has played with most of the women and some of the men and knows them personally, temperamentally and their game technically, Sania will be able to giver her insights which viewers enjoy.”

Meanwhile, Sania had a stellar playing career, and won six Grand Slam titles overall, that include three mixed doubles, and as many women’s doubles titles. She also formed a formidable partnership with Martina Hingis, and was also ranked No. 1 in doubles for a long time.
