Rohit Sharma is once again struggling in the Indian Premier League. With scores of 0, 4 and 13 in the first two matches of IPL 2025, the former Mumbai Indians captain has been made an Impact Player. However, so far, he hasn’t made any impact whatsoever. Former England captain has made a bold claim. He believes MI would have dropped him had it not been for the name “Rohit Sharma”.
“If he is still the best person to captain the national side, how come he is not the best captain to lead the franchise team? He is going to play the whole season. If you look at his numbers, the reason is clear. You can get away with average numbers if you are the captain. If your name is not Rohit Sharma, you are probably losing your place in the side. Those numbers are not good enough for a player. He needs run. Rohit’s numbers are a real problem for the side,” Michael Vaughan said on the Cricbuzz show.
Rohit Sharma’s numbers in IPL
Despite scoring over 6500 runs in IPL, Rohit Sharma’s numbers do not do any justice to his capabilities. Since 2020, Rohit has scored only 7 half-centuries and a century. As an opener, in fact, since 2017, his best season was 2024 when he scored 417 runs at an average of 32.08 and a strike rate of 150.00.
With his dwindling stats in IPL, Mumbai Indians made a sensational move, removing Rohit from captaincy before IPL 2024. He was still the Indian captain across all formats. While the decision did not go well among fans, the numbers did justify that move.
“Rohit has only passed fifty eight times. He has got 1 century. I always scratch my head with Rohit Sharma in Mumbai. I always think if he is good enough to be the Indian captain, how is he not captaining MI. I don’t get it. He is a wonderful captain for India. He has done a great job and you have to look only at the last couple of years of the white-ball team. But if you look at the numbers, you know why,” Michael Vaughan added.
