Rohit Sharma to undergo surgery after IPL 2025 with aim of being 100% for ODI World Cup 2027

Taking retirement from Test cricket may help Rohit Sharma address a fitness concern. For nearly 5 years, he has been managing a hamstring issue. Due to his commitments as the India cricket team’s all-format captain, Rohit continued to work around. But in the last 12 months, he’s retired from two formats of the game.

Rohit Sharma to resolve fitness issues

With eyes set on just ODIs and the World Cup 2027 in particular, Rohit is expected to undergo left hamstring surgery. This will happen likely after the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 ends. Many have criticised Rohit’s ability to play prolonged innings, and it turns out his hamstring issue may have played a big part in that. His mobility has also been hampered due to it.

“If Rohit wants to play the 2027 World Cup, this is the right time to get the surgery done. He has been putting it off for years because of leadership duties, but now the schedule allows him to recover without rushing back,” a source told CricBlogger.

Ample time to recover

Since the 50-over schedule isn’t as hectic, Rohit will have ample time to recover. He had undergone surgery on his right upper quadriceps tendon in November 2016 and required about 3 months to recover. We can expect Rohit to be on his feet in about 3-4 months post his hamstring surgery.

India’s next ODI series is against Bangladesh in August, but that tour isn’t 100% certain to go ahead after a senior Bangladeshi government official made inflammatory comments about India. But let’s say it goes ahead. Then Team India’s next assignment will be the Asia Cup 2025. The future of that tournament isn’t certain either due to tensions between India and Pakistan. The next confirmed ODI series is actually in October against Australia.

This means that post IPL 2025 would be the ideal time for Rohit to go under the knife. The rigours of T20I and Test aren’t a factor now, and so Rohit can plan everything based on the ODI World Cup 2027. That will be his goal going forward.
