Rohit Sharma buries BGT ghosts before ICC Champions Trophy, scores 76-ball hundred against England

It’s been a long time coming. After five months of failure, Rohit Sharma has finally entered triple digits again. After experiencing career-worst form against New Zealand and Australia in Test cricket, many wanted the Indian captain to step down. The pressure was mounting. Although he hadn’t played an ODI match since his slump started, everyone was judging him based on his red-ball performance.

Rohit Sharma shows form is temporary; form is permanent

When he failed in Nagpur, everyone came for him again. Well, those critics are silenced now. Rohit Sharma scored his 32nd ODI century and distanced himself from Ricky Ponting, who has 30 hundreds to his name. Only Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar are ahead of him.

He looked jittery at the Barabati Stadium at the start. But after his first boundary, he opened up. The ‘old’ Rohit Sharma was back. There were sixes over cover and long off. Short balls were dispatched with ease. He had returned to his best. That’s what greats of the game do.

Having changed his style of play in 2022, Rohit didn’t bat for form but to destroy the opposition. His fifty came in just 30 balls, and he slowed down by his standard to his hundred in 76 deliveries. Given that some wanted him out, even from the ICC Champions Trophy, this was an authoritative knock.

Teams will be alerted as well. Hitman is back, and just like he changed the game up top in the ODI World Cup 2023, he’ll thrash and maybe defeat the opposition on his own.
