Punjab Kings strengthened their bid for a place in the IPL 2025 playoffs with a dominant win against the Lucknow Super Giants on Sunday. Prabhsimran Singh scored a stunning 91 while Shreyas Iyer, Shashank Singh and others chipped in with vital contributions to power the hosts to a humungous 236/5. In response, Arshdeep Singh broke the back of the chase with 3 wickets in the powerplay to seal a 37-run win. After the PBKS vs LSG game, Shreyas and Co have jumped to 2nd in the IPL 2025 points table, with LSG stuck at 7th.
Prabhsimran goes berserk, field day for LSG
Priyansh Arya’s stay was short-lived, but Prabhsimran Singh and Josh Inglis took the attack to LSG in the powerplay. Inglis welcomed Mayank Yadav with three sixes, while Prabhsimran took on Avesh and Digvesh Rathi. Akash Singh, playing his first game of IPL 2025, picked up 2 wickets in the powerplay but PBKS raced to 66/2.
Prabhsimran continued his assault to make it three successive half-centuries. Captain Shreyas played a vital support role, regularly piercing the gaps on offer. Lucknow were poor in the field and the hosts made it certain to punish the Rishabh Pant led side handsomely. Digvesh eventually got rid of Shreyas for 45, not before he stitched a 78-run stand with Prabhsimran.
The PBKS opener looked set for a hundred, but fell short on 91. Marcus Stoinis and Shashank Singh provided some late fireworks to propel PBKS to a stunning 236/5. LSG’s lead pacers Avesh Khan and Mayank Yadav combined to concede 117 in their 8 overs without a wicket.
Arshdeep rocks Lucknow
If Prabhsimran Singh nailed the batting powerplay, Arshdeep Singh ensured that LSG were never in the chase to begin with. The left-arm quick got Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram in the same over. Bowling his third in the powerplay he then sent Nicholas Pooran packing to leave LSG struggling 27/3.
Rishabh Pant continued to struggle on a sluggish surface, with PBKS’ total seemingly too steep of a hill to climb. The LSG skipper was soon dismissed for a torturous 18. David Miller’s stay was also short lived, leaving LSG in tatters.
Abdul Samad and Ayush Badoni added some respectability to the LSG innings. The right-hand duo chipped in vital cameos of their own to take LSG past the 100 and 150-run mark. They went particularly hard on Marcus Stoinis and Vijaykumar Vyshak, picking up 48 in their 3 overs. However, a target of 237 was always going to be well beyond reach, and they settled for a 37-run loss.
With a NRR boosting win, Punjab Kings climbed up to second in the IPL 2025 points table. Shreyas Iyer and Co have 15 points in 11 games, likely needing just another win to seal a playoff berth. LSG meanwhile, have slipped to 7th and their NRR also has taken a major hit. Rishabh Pant and Co can now only get to a maximum of 16 points, but will need to win all their remaining games.
