On this day: When franchises went into bidding war for MS Dhoni at IPL Auction

Indian Premier League is the most popular cricket tournament in the world. The tournament is graced by the most popular and star players from all around the world. The journey of the rich-cash league started on this day when IPL witnessed their first Auction on 20 December 2008.

This was the day when MS Dhoni went under the hammer in the IPL Auction for the first and the last time in IPL history. With no surprise, Dhoni emerged as the highest-bidded player in the first IPL Auction 2008.

Dhoni had triggered a bidding war between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. CSK outbid the Mumbai Indians by $1.5 million to sign Dhoni.

The second costliest player in the inaugural IPL Auction was Andrew Symonds, who was signed by the now-defunct Deccan Chargers team.

Indian Premier League has had 16 successful seasons where CSK have won five titles in level with Mumbai Indians MI.

IPL 2024 Auction was the latest Auction where Australian pacer Mitchell Starc became the highest-paid player in IPL history with a $2.98 million deal.
