Bangladesh had a forgettable Champions Trophy campaign and now have rung in the changes. Miraz, one of their star players, takes over the captain’s armband. The change is leadership comes before the India vs Bangladesh series in August. Miraz however will get a taste of it in the series against Sri Lanka in July.
Miraz is not a newcomer to Bangladesh captaincy. He led the Tigers in 4 ODIs last year against Afghanistan and West Indies. Bangladesh lost all those games but the BCB saw enough to hand him the reigns to the team.
“It is a huge honour for me to be entrusted with this responsibility by the board. Leading the country is a dream for any cricketer and I am grateful for the confidence the board has shown in me. I have every faith in this team. We have the talent and the belief to play fearless cricket. I want us to perform with confidence, play without inhibition and continue giving our best for the country,” Miraz said in a statement.
Najmul Shanto was appointed captain for all three formats in February last year. However, their performance has since taken a nosedive. BCB, undergoing an upheaval themselves, have gone the way of split captaincy. Miraz leads in ODIs, Shanto continues to lead in Tests while Liton Das is the T20I skipper.
