Since Rishabh Pant’s unfortunate absence, KS Bharat has donned the Indian wicketkeeping gloves in Tests. The pressure to fill Pant’s explosive shoes has been immense, and Bharat’s underwhelming performance has sparked a crucial question: is it time to hand a debut to young Dhruv Jurel?
While KS Bharat has shown glimpses of promise at the domestic level, translating that success to the international stage has proven challenging. In 12 Test innings, he’s managed just 221 runs at an average of 20.09, falling short of expectations set by legends like MS Dhoni and Rishabh Pant. His inability to convert starts – evident in scores like 41, 28, and 17 in the ongoing England series – has further fueled the debate.
Head coach Rahul Dravid, while avoiding harsh criticism, has acknowledged Bharat’s need to “up the ante.” Despite opportunities, Bharat hasn’t capitalized, leaving a gap in India’s wicketkeeping department.

Dhruv Jurel in place of KS Bharat
This void opens the door for Dhruv Jurel, a 23-year-old with impressive domestic credentials. With 790 runs in 15 matches, including a top score of 249, Jurel has demonstrated his batting prowess. Though included in the squad for the first two Tests, he remained benched.
With KL Rahul’s injury status uncertain for the upcoming Rajkot Test, the situation presents a perfect opportunity for Jurel. His youthful energy, combined with his domestic track record, could offer a fresh perspective at the crucial wicketkeeper-batter position.
The decision lies with the Indian selectors. Do they stick with Bharat, hoping he finds his rhythm, or does Jurel’s potential warrant an immediate chance? The upcoming Test will be a decisive one, not just for the series against England, but also for the future of Indian wicketkeeping.
