KL Rahul asks “why are you thinking about next youngster” after captaincy snub

KL Rahul is not quite a fan of handing over the reins of the India cricket team to youngsters yet. His remarks come a day after Bumrah and himself were snubbed, and instead Shubman Gill was named the new Test captain. Rahul questioned the need for the decision makers to think far ahead when a player has proved his caliber in a recent tournament.

Rahul slams decision makers

In an interview with Nasser Hussain on SkySports, Rahul hit out at the decision makers, wondering why they forget about players who performed well in the recent past.

The hard part is that people who make decisions seem to forget what a player has done in the recent tournament. That has been a little bit of a challenge for me,” Rahul said.

He further noted that people were bound to suggest looking for new players for the 2027 World Cup and ICC events thereafter following the series against England. Rahul questioned the need to do so, raising a pertinent point of why the team won’t stick to what is working for them.

“I don’t know when the next ODI series will be, but by the time the English summer gets over, which could be about five (three) months, you see people writing and commenting that we need to look for players for the 2027 World Cup or the next World Cup after. And sometimes, as a player, you sit back and think, ‘why should there be a change when something’s working for you? Why are you thinking about the next youngster already?‘” Rahul said.

Why was Rahul ignored as option for Test captaincy?

“KL not really; he’s captained a while back; he’s a quality player, and I hope he has a big series,” Agarkar explained in a press conference on Saturday
