The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is hunting to find Rohit Sharma’s replacement as the India cricket team’s Test captain. Shubman Gill seems to be the front-runner for the job. He had been earmarked as a future leader long ago and has already been trusted as vice-captain in ODIs and T20Is. Moreover, he also leads the Gujarat Titans.
Some aren’t sold on making Gill India’s next Test skipper. A main contention is his record. An average of 35.05 in 32 matches isn’t flattering. To make someone captain when they were dropped midway through the last Test series they played doesn’t seem great.
Jasprit Bumrah, who was leading India in Rohit’s absence, seems to have completely gone out of the reckoning. Some reports suggest that the BCCI aren’t sold on his fitness and don’t wish to have him in a leadership role. Others state that Bumrah himself has decided to let go of responsibilities.
Jadeja, India’s new Test captain?
Ravichandran Ashwin, who was part of India’s Test team in Australia, has suggested a name no one expected to hear. His idea is to give his former spin twin, Ravindra Jadeja, the captaincy. He’s the most senior player in the team with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli gone. Ashwin reckons that BCCI can make Gill, Jadeja’s understudy, for the next couple of years and then take over as India’s Test captain.
“First of all, everyone is saying that Gill is the captain. Everyone is going in that direction. But there is a loud option in Jasprit Bumrah, and why do we forget about Ravindra Jadeja? If you are willing to go for a new person as captain, I would say, why not make him (Gill) an understudy of an experienced guy for two years before handing him the job on a full-time basis?”
