Shaun Marsh was probably the IPL’s first superstar. Playing for Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), the stylish southpaw scored the most runs in the league’s inaugural edition. Marsh ended the season with 616 runs at 68.44 in 11 matches and a strike rate of 139.68.
Those freakish numbers are not replicated easily, even today. He went on to play in the IPL until 2017, but couldn’t replicate his performance.
Now at 40, Shaun Marsh has finally decided to hang up his boots. The southpaw plays for the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League and has decided to call it quits on January 17 after the final group stage of the 2023-24 edition.

Marsh will end his career as the sixth-highest run scorer in the BBL and put out a statement to thank the Renegades, his teammates, and friends.
“I have loved playing for the Renegades, I’ve met some great people over the last five years and the friendships I’ve made will last a lifetime.”
“This playing group is special. They’ve been amazing to me, amazing teammates and even better friends.
“Our members and fans are some of the most passionate out there and I’m so thankful for their support over the journey.
“Stick with us, there’s a huge amount of talent in this group and I have no doubt they’ll lead this group back to the top.”
“I’ve got some fond memories of playing in Perth and really enjoyed my time there. The back-to-back titles are up there for me as the most enjoyable moments I’ve experienced on a cricket field,” he concluded.
