IPL winner for Mumbai Indians wins Jharkhand Cricket polls

Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) has a new secretary. Former India batter, Saurabh Tiwary, who won the IPL title with Mumbai Indians in 2020 is now JSCA’s new secretary after he announced his retirement from cricket last year. His fellow Jharkhand teammate, Shahbaz Nadeem, who played two Tests for India is the new joint secretary.

This is not the first time that former India cricketers have joined cricket administration. Anil Kumble, Venkatesh Prasad and Javagal Srinath were elected as the President, Vice-President and Secretary of Karnataka State Cricket Association in 2010. Another former India captain, Sourav Ganguly served as the President of Cricket Association of Bengal and then BCCI.

“There was a group here who approached me and Saurabh, asking us to stand for the elections. They wanted us to guide Jharkhand cricket. Initially, I was in two minds but after giving it a thought, we decided to contest the elections. This state has made us cricketers and we have played here for the last 25 years. Now it has given us a chance to be cricket administrators. We feel we can contribute,” Shahbaz Nadeem told The Indian Express.

New innings for Tiwary-Nadeem

Saurabh Tiwary, who sported MS Dhoni-like looks with long hair, played three ODIs for India. In 93 IPL matches, Tiwary scored 1494 runs, including eight fifties. He was known as a hard-hitter like Dhoni. He made his India debut when Dhoni was the captain back in 2010. However, he did not feature after the series against New Zealand at home. Tiwary was also Virat Kohli’s teammate during his India U19 days.

The new joint secretary of JSCA, Shahbaz Nadeem, is a domestic stalwart with 542 first-class wickets. While he played two Tests for India in 2019 and 2021, with Ravindra Jadeja present, the left-arm spinner could not continue his run. But in those two Tests, Nadeem bagged 8 wickets against South Africa and England.

In IPL, Nadeem played seven seasons for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals). He also played three seasons for Sunrisers Hyderabad, bagging a total of 48 wickets in 72 matches at an economy rate of 7.56. While Lucknow Super Giants picked him at the IPL 2022 auction, he did not get a game.

Now, both players will begin their new innings as cricket administrators after a successful cricket journey.
