India A squad: No Rohit Sharma & Virat Kohli, Patidar to captain against Australia A

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have announced the India A squad for the upcoming 3-match one-day series against Australia A, scheduled to be played at Kanpur. Although reports suggested that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli would feature in the series, that won’t happen.

Rest for Rohit Sharma & Virat Kohli continues

The senior pros, both of whom have retired from Test and T20I cricket, haven’t played for Team India since March, and their last competitive game came in early June. About two weeks ago, both had undergone pre-season fitness assessments, and it was rumoured that Rohit and Kohli would fine-tune themselves before the Australia vs India ODI series in October.

Asia Cup members in India A squad

But it seems neither they nor the BCCI think that’s necessary. Tilak Varma has been named captain of India A, but since he’s part of the Asia Cup team, Rajat Patidar will take over as skipper for the first match. Abhishek Sharma, Harshit Rana, and Arshdeep Singh, who are also in the UAE with Tilak, will also link up with India A after the Asia Cup ends.

No Sanju Samson

Sanju Samson hasn’t been included either, which could mean that the BCCI doesn’t view him as an option in ODI cricket going forward. But it could also mean that he has seen enough to back him as India’s second wicketkeeper after KL Rahul.
