If the RR vs MI clash on Thursday is anything to go by, the Hardik Pandya-led team could very well be on their way to claim the sixth IPL title. After all the team has won their sixth match on the trot this season — after they beat Rajasthan at their home by a massive 100 runs. And as a result, have gone on to the top of the table, surpassing RCB, with 14 points for now.
MI Register 6 Wins On the Trot
What these six matches have done for MI is, not only have they brought the team back in the reckoning for the IPL 2025 playoffs, but also instilled a belief in the side, that they can script a success story like that of IPL 2015, where they were down and out just like this time around. After the end of 5 matches, Mumbai were in the bottom half, having won only one match. But from there on they have gone on to beat — DC, SRH, CSK, SRH, LSG, and now RR.
That also means the side has secured 6 consecutive victories in IPL for the third time, with the first instance happening in 2008, and then in 2017. Having said that, that is not the IPL record; KKR had won 10 in IPL 2014-15, but given Mumbai’s form, that possibility cannot be ruled out. Meanwhile, coming back to the match, despite losing the toss, MI were in total control right from the very start of the match.
IPL Playoffs Not Far Away
Starting with Ryan Rickelton (61) and Rohit Sharma (53), the opening pair went on a rampage against an RR team, who were without their best pacer, Sandeep Sharma. The former MI skipper, Rohit went on to score his third consecutive fifty, and also amassed 6,000 runs for the franchise.
After their departure, Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav continued with the momentum and scored 48 from 23 balls each, eventually ending with 217/2. Come Rajasthan’s batting, they never looked in the game. Last match centurion vs GT, 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi was out for a duck, and from there on, no batter could just deliver.
At one stage, the hosts were reduced to 47/5, and were eventually bundled out for 117. All the Mumbai bowlers chipped in with wickets. Jasprit Bumrah was excellent with figures of 2/15 in his 4 overs. Karn Sharma went a step ahead and bagged 3/23. And that failure for RR meant, they are officially out of the playoffs race for IPL 2025.
