Gujarat Titans defy rain & Jasprit Bumrah to claim last-ball win at Wankhede

We have seen the best match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 at the Wankhede Stadium. The Gujarat Titans (GT) have beaten the Mumbai Indians (MI) on the last ball of a 39-over match. The game could have easily gone to the Super Over, but a missed run-out deprived the viewers of the match.

Mumbai were on a 6-match streak and had even topped the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 points table after dwelling at the bottom. But it wasnโ€™t just Mumbai that Gujarat battled.

Rain games at Wankhede

Rain had threatened the match even before it started. But luckily, we didnโ€™t see enough rain to stop the match in the first innings. However, while chasing, it seemed like the game would be stopped at any moment. Gujarat even lost Sai Sudharsan in the second over.

Once the 5-over mark was crossed, the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS). And Titans were behind by 13 runs. An expensive 8th over from MI captain Hardik Pandya took them 5 runs over the required DLS. But after four consecutive tight overs and the wicket of Jos Buttler, Gujarat were behind the DLS by 5 runs after the 12th over.

The rain then picked up as well. Knowing they need to get a move on, Gujarat brought in Sherfane Rutherford as the impact substitute. And boy, he had a big impact. In the 13th and 14th overs, GT scored 28 runs, and they were 8 runs ahead of the DLS score when rain stopped play.

Jasprit Bumrah brings MI back

But luck seemed on MIโ€™s side. The match restarted in 25 minutes as the rain stopped. And Rutherford and Shubman Gill had to chase 49 runs from 36 balls. The target wasnโ€™t tough to get, but Jasprit Bumrah still had 2 overs left. And what Gujarat had feared the most, that happened.

On the fourth ball after play resumed, Bumrah clean bowled Gill. Having previously been hit for a boundary, Bumrah pitched the ball further up. It skidded, came back a touch, and Gill was beaten all ends up. The stumps were shattered, and MI were ecstatic. Trent Boult was given his final over by Hardik Pandya next, and he trapped Rutherford.

Gujarat now had two batters left: Rahul Tewatia and Shahrukh Khan. Pandya knew what MI needed and decided to bowl Bumrah out as well. And Bumrah clean bowled Shahrukh in a similar manner that he did Gill. The ball skidded, hit the back leg, and stumps were uprooted once again.

GT were now behind the DLS score by 2 runs. And they needed 31 off 18. Ashwani Kumar got Rashid Khan thanks to a brilliant review, and MI had now taken 4 wickets in 4 overs. And as luck would have it, rain returned again. This time, GT were 5 runs behind. With Tewatia and Gerald Coetzee in the middle, they still needed 24 runs from 2 overs.

GT sneak away with the win

Rain cut the match to a 19-over game, with GT needing 15 runs to win in 6 balls. Despite a powerful hit from Coetzee and a no-ball, we went to the last ball with 1 run needed in 1 ball. It was 50-50 since Arshad Khan was on strike. He smashed the ball to mid-off and ran, but Pandya couldnโ€™t hit the stumps on the non-striker end, and GT won by 3 wickets by the DLS method.
