Gill reveals Gambhir, Agarkar have no expectations from new Test captain

India cricket team’s new Test captain Shubman Gill has revealed head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s first reactions after he was named skipper. The Punjab batter was named Rohit Sharma’s successor following the latter’s abrupt decision to retire from Tests last month. Ahead of the five-match Test series against England, Gill has spilled the beans on what Gambhir and Agarkar expect from him.

“Want me to express myself…”

In a chat with Dinesh Karthik on Sky Sports, Gill said that he had a conversation about expectations multiple times with Gambhir and Agarkar. The new Test captain revealed that the duo had told him that they just wanted the batter to express himself and that they had no expectations from him.

The expectations… I’ve had this conversation numerous times with Gauti bhai and Ajit bhai. They just want me to be able to express myself as a leader. That’s what they’ve told me ‘there are no expectations’. They are not expecting me to do something I am not capable of,” Gill said.

Further, Gill said that while there was no expectations from the coach or the chief selector, he had set certain expectations for himself as a player. The Punjab batter said that apart from winning silverware, he wants to build a culture in the team where everyone is happy and secure.

Apart from all the silverware and trophies aside, I would ideally like to build a culture where everyone is very secure and happy. I know it can be a very difficult environment, especially with all the competition or the number of matches that we play and different squads coming in, but if I am able to do that, that would be my goal,” Gill added.

Gill’s first assignment as India captain will be the five-match Test series against England that begins from June 20.
