Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has seemingly thrown his weight behind Shubman Gill to become the next captain of the Indian Test team. The Punjab batter is currently leading Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025, who are second on the points table with 8 wins from 11 matches. Gill is rumoured to be Rohit Sharma’s successor in the red-ball format following the latter’s abrupt decision to retire from Tests.
Gavaskar mighty impressed with captain Gill
Speaking on JioHotstar, Gavaskar said that he was very impressed by Gill’s all-round performance as captain in IPL 2025. He heaped praise on the batter for not only scoring runs and supporting other batters but also for his involvement in bowling. Citing Rashid Khan’s example, Gavaskar pointed out that despite having a bad start to the tournament with the ball, Gill’s body language as captain never showed any disappointment with the bowler.
GT need one more win to cement their spot in the IPL 2025 playoffs. Talking about Gill, he is GT’s second highest run-getter in this season with 508 runs to his name. The trio of Sudarshan-Gill-Buttler created history recently making GT the first team to have three batters who have surpassed 500 runs in an IPL season.
Gill is expected to be formally announced as the next Test captain in a press conference later next week. He has reportedly already met chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir to discuss the future roadmap for the Test team. India will take on England in a five-match Test series from June 20 onwards. The series could very well be Gill’s first assignment as the new Test captain.
