Mohun Bagan opened the scoring in the first half, with Hector Yuste producing a sublime flick from a corner to hand Mariners the lead. However, the lead lasted only for a short time, as Cleiton D’Silva equalised for East Bengal with a thunderous punch. Dmitri Petratos failed to convert a spot-kick opportunity in the stoppage time of first half, and it proved costly. East Bengal added two goals in the second half. Both goals came because of mistakes from Mohun Bagan players.
