DRS May 17: No Shreyas Iyer, India A squad out, DC suffer multiple blows & Rohit Sharma stand

The wait for Shreyas Iyer’s return to the Test team is extended as the star batter has been left out of the India A squad. The selectors unveiled the 18-member squad for the tour to the UK which will be led by Abhimanyu Easwaran. Meanwhile, DC suffered multiple setbacks in the form of their overseas players just before IPL 2025 resumes. Rohit Sharma might have gone away from Tests but he has cemented his legacy at the Wankhede stadium. On that note, let’s take a look at the top headlines from Friday.

India A squad announced

The BCCI on Friday announced the India A squad for the England tour, with a few surprises. Abhimanyu Easwaran as named the skipper of the side for three-match series starting on May 30. while Dhruv Jurel was his deputy. The 18-member squad consisted of India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Tanush Kotian, Mukesh Kumar and Akash Deep as well. Read more here.

No luck for Iyer

India’s 20-man squad did not include Shreyas Iyer. The 30-year-old played the last of his 14 Tests a year ago and has been out of the picture. He had a decent Ranji Trophy season with Mumbai, scoring 480 runs in just 7 innings.BCCI however have named Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan in the squad for the 2nd game, a provision they could have made for Shreyas as well. Bad news for DC

Delhi Capitals are likely to be the team that will be most affected by the pullout of overseas stars as IPL 2025 is set to resume. The list is long — and includes the likes of vice-captain Faf De PlessisMitchell Starc, Donovan Ferreira, and Jake Fraser-McGurk. While the team has roped in Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman, he won’t be around for all matches, and as per reports is expected to join only on May 18. Read more here.

Even as the BCCI announced the India A squad for England tour on Friday, it seemed that Gautam Gambhir would be the coach of the team. But as it turns out, former India batter Hrishikesh Kanitkar could be in-charge of the team.
