Australia name squad for West Indies T20Is, Josh Hazlewood returns to shortest format

Just a few hours after the IPL 2025 got over, Cricket Australia named their squad for the upcoming T20I series vs the West Indies, on Wednesday. Notably, some of the league stars were overlooked for selection. DC’s Jake Fraser-McGurk, who showed poor form, has been left out of the team. Instead, Mitchell Owen and Matt Kuhnemann were preferred.

Jake Fraser-McGurk Axed from Australia

Going further, PBKS players Xavier Bartlett and Marcus Stoinis were left out as well. As far as McGurk is concerned, in the last seven matches he played, he has scored only one fifty, and failed to cross even 20 in the rest of them. Owen, on the other hand, finished as the highest run-getter in the BBL, scoring 452 in 11 innings, at an average of 45.20.

In the final, he slammed a ton in just 42 deliveries, to guide Hobart Hurricanes to a title as well. Meanwhile, Mitchell Marsh will lead the team, who had a stellar IPL showing for LSG, where he scored 627 runs in 13 matches. Glenn Maxwell, who was poor in the tournament, gets a chance, and so does injured Tim David, who did not play the final.

Josh Hazlewood Back in T20Is

Interestingly, Cameron Green and Josh Hazlewood return to the T20I team. Hazle had a stellar season for RCB, and helped the team win the title with his 22 wickets. The series starts on July 19.

“We have a busy T20 schedule coming up through this series, followed by three against South Africa and New Zealand and five matches against India at home as we continue to refine and build a squad we think will be the right fit for the World Cup on the subcontinent,” Chair of Selectors George Bailey said. “There are a number of players outside the squad who can still force their way into the mix for those upcoming Indian Series and through the Big Bash.

“The connection, role development and combinations we will have as options are growing nicely as we build towards the World Cup. It’s an exciting time in our T20 space,” he added.
