In the semi-finals of the Men’s Singles event at the All England Open Super 1000 Badminton Championships in Birmingham, Lakshya Sen will be aiming to keep the Indian flag flying high when he faces Jonatan Christie of Indonesia. On the penultimate day of the competition, Sen is the only remaining Indian player.
Players like HS Prannoy and Kidambi Srikanth withdrew from the men’s singles competition in the first round. In the women’s singles Round of 16, Korea’s An Se Young would defeat two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu. The top men’s doubles team, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, also lost to Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Bagas Maulana of Indonesia in the Round of 16.
Sen, who had lost to Viktor Axelsen in the championship match of the prestigious event in 2022 and finished runner-up, made it to the final four with a valiant victory over Lee Zii Jia. The Malaysian was defeated 20-22, 21-16, 21-19 in a nail-biting quarterfinal match.
Christie, however, had defeated Shi Yu Qi 21–12 in their opening match when the latter made the decision to retire, enabling the Indonesian to advance to the round of four and set up a semifinal matchup with Sen.
