Bangladesh don’t get too many feel-good cricket days, so when one shows up, it deserves to be put on record properly. Mushfiqur Rahim walked into his 100th Test in Mirpur with the usual expectations on his shoulders of being Bangladesh’s linchpin, and by the end of the day he had produced the kind of innings that he won’t forget ever.
Mushfiqur Rahim joins elite list with superb century
Mushfiqur has bailed Bangladesh out so many times that this almost felt routine, except nothing about scoring a hundred in a landmark Test is ordinary. He came in when the scorecard already looked uncomfortable. Bangladesh were 95 for 3, the sort of situation where Rahim was asked to do heavy duty. He first settled in with Mominul Haque, and the two added 107 the slow, old-fashioned way.
After that partnership broke, Litton Das joined him, and they added another 108. Rahim never really rushed, never tried to decorate the innings. He just kept batting and eventually got to 106 off 214 balls, becoming the latest entrant in a pretty exclusive club. After the end of Day 1, he was stranded on 99* but he easily managed to get into the elite list of batters who have had to opportunity to hit centuries on their 100th Test appearance.
Before Rahim, only ten others had done it, and the list includes some serious names. Ricky Ponting even managed two in the same match. For a Bangladeshi batter to now sit in that company says a lot about the kind of career Rahim has built.
