39-year-old Nirmala Devi eyes Paris Olympic 2024 qualification in 50 kg category after Nationals win

With just six months remaining until the Paris Olympics, Indian wrestling faces significant challenges in terms of preparedness. In contrast to the sport’s success in fetching two Olympic medals in Tokyo, the current scenario appears grim for 2024. Only Antim Panghal has secured an Olympic quota so far, and the prospects for other wrestlers clinching a spot in Paris are uncertain.

Last year, domestic wrestling activities were halted due to protests against then Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, leading to the absence of national camps and competitions. Even after the election, the WFI faces suspension by the Sports Ministry, with an ad hoc panel from IOA overseeing administrative affairs.

In the senior women’s national event, the veteran Nirmala Devi, often referred to as a ‘Wily Old Warhorse,’ showcased her prowess by defeating a talented young wrestler in the 50 kg final. Nirmala, who returned from knee surgery two years ago, aims to fulfil her dream of representing India at the Olympics.

Two-time world Championships medallist Vinesh Phogat, a prominent name in Indian wrestling, is set to make a comeback after a 15-month hiatus. Antim Panghal has already secured an Olympic quota in the 53kg category, but Vinesh’s return may bring competitive trials for selection. Tokyo Olympian Anshu Malik is also recovering from injury, hoping to bounce back after a challenging year in 2023.
