Aiden Markram’s superb century helped South Africa clinched the ICC World Test Championship 2025. Having scored a duck in the first innings, the SA opener left no stone unturned in a knock for the ages. The Australian attack was no match for him, as stitched a wonderful partnership with captain Bavuma. He reached his century, his 8th, on Day 3 putting SA within touching distance. Markram then held fort even as Temba Bavuma and Tristan Stubbs were dismissed in quick succession. The opener could not get the winning runs after being caught at mid on by Travis Head.
However, Markram had done his job. There were no celebrations from the Australians who congratulated him on his vigil. The Lord’s crowd acknowledged the show, with a standing ovation to one of the most important innings in Proteas history.
Speaking after the game, Markram said that it was a dream to play at the venue.
“Haven’t scored more important runs. Weird how things work out if you see the first innings. Ultimately you get luck and it worked out. It will yes. Lord’s is a place where every Test cricketer wants to play. Plenty of South African fans were there and it was one of those special days,” Markram added.
