Have you seen a much more consistent batting pair than Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan? Well, you haven’t, at least not in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where they have already become the greatest all-Indian pair! The Gujarat Titans (GT) have struck gold by retaining both talents for years to come.
Gill-Sai demolition job vs DC
In one of the most clinical batting displays the IPL has seen, Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan dismantled Delhi Capitals (DC) with cold precision, chasing 200 without losing a single wicket — and with six balls to spare. It is unfathomable, but the Gill-Sai combo did it spotlessly. From the very first over, the pair were in complete command, never once letting the required rate rattle them.
Sudharsan set the tone with early intent, finding gaps with ease and dispatching anything remotely loose. His fluency allowed Gill to ease into the innings, and once settled, the GT skipper showcased his natural elegance, matching Sudharsan stroke for stroke. Their shot selection was impeccable, and the acceleration was perfectly timed, which left the hosts reeling. KL Rahul’s incredible first-innings hundred went in vain.
Shubman Gill-Sai Sudharsan partnership in IPL
Fascinatingly, when the duo completed the chase, it didn’t look extremely out of this world because the GT pair have made a habit of outpunching opponents game after game. After batting just 30 times together, the duo have notched up seven century-plus stands, which is only second after Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers (10). Mind you, the RCB veterans batted 76 times!
- Span: 2022-2025
- Innings: 30
- Runs: 1985
- Highest Partnership: 210
- Average: 68.44
- Centuries: 7
- Double-centuries: 2
- Fifties: 9
In fact, their 1985 runs together is already now the most any Indian pair have piled up together in IPL history, making a loud case for Gill and Sudharsan to be the greatest Indian duo in the tournament. Overall, they stand fifth on the list, and are just 47 runs away from Faf du Plessis & Kohli’s tally of 2032 runs.
Most runs by an Indian pair in an IPL season
Rank | Runs | Pair | Team | Season |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 839 | Shubman Gill & Sai Sudharsan | GT | 2025* |
2 | 744 | Shikhar Dhawan & Prithvi Shaw | DC | 2021 |
3 | 671 | Mayank Agarwal & KL Rahul | PBKS | 2020 |
4 | 602 | Mayank Agarwal & KL Rahul | PBKS | 2021 |
5 | 601 | Virat Kohli & Devdutt Padikkal | RCB | 2021 |
What’s heartening to witness is the way that both Sudharsan and Gill make runs. They aren’t all-out power hitters but still manage to work at strike rates over 145+ and 138+, respectively. Against DC, both operated at a run rate of 10.7, above the required run rate of 10.00. The elegance and timing of their strokeplays are enchanting to an avid cricket lover. Yes, GT are highly dependent on the duo, but the sheer consistency makes them a well-trusted powerhouses.
