Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have done extremely well ever since their inclusion in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2022. In the last three years, they have made the Playoffs twice. Considering they don’t have the heritage or those big names, LSG’s performance has been great.
This year, Lucknow would like to get their hands on that silverware. Of course, before running you have to start walking. LSG first need to reach the IPL 2025 Playoffs and then set their eyes on the trophy.
IPL 2025 performance so far
As of April 15, LSG is one of two teams that have played 7 of their 14 group-stage matches. And they have a 4-3 record. To determine how well they can play in the remaining matches, one must analyse their performance so far.
Wins: SRH (ranked 9th), MI (ranked 7th), KKR (ranked 5th), GT (ranked 1st)
Losses: DC (ranked 2nd), PBKS (ranked 6th), CSK (ranked 10th)
LSG have a mixed bag of results. They have beaten one really strong side, Gujarat Titans (GT), and lost a really close match to Delhi Capitals (DC) by 1 wicket. These two matches show they can go toe-to-toe with the best teams. However, they have also lost to Chennai Super Kings (CSK), who really haven’t been that great.
IPL 2025 Playoffs: LSG Qualification Scenarios
Barring Rajasthan Royals (RR), all of the eight teams will play one match each before LSG’s next match on April 19. The table would have shifted by then, and teams like Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) may leapfrog them. This could mean that by the end of the week, LSG might be placed 6th instead of 4th.
16 points is usually what guarantees your IPL 2025 Playoffs qualification. And LSG would aim for that. Last year, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) did qualify with 14 points, but in 2022 and 2023, 16 points was the cutoff for the final four.
That means they need to win four of their remaining seven matches. This may not be that easy. very much possible. LSG don’t have a very good record at their home ground, Ekana Cricket Stadium. They are 2-2 in IPL 2025. And they face DC, RCB and Sunrisers Hyderabad at home.
If they manage to beat SRH and one of DC or RCB, it will mean they are doing well. Away from home, they’ll have RR, Mumbai Indians (MI), PBKS and GT. Considering they have a 2-1 record away from home, LSG might not be too worried. RR and MI aren’t having the best of seasons either.
Mayank Yadav is returning. Rishabh Pant and Ravi Bishnoi have come to form at last. These three things bode well for LSG. Their top three of Aiden Markram, Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran have done very well. Digvesh Rathee and Shardul Thakur have surprised everyone as well. All in all, LSG seem to have a very realistic chance of qualifying for the IPL 2025 Playoffs.
