Match-losing knock? ‘Charmed’ Devon Conway hits sluggish 39-ball 50, gets retired out later

In what should have been a high-octane chase, Devon Conway’s curiously sedate 50 off 39 balls stood out for all the wrong reasons as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) kept faltering in their run chase of 220 against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Mullanpur.

Fascinatingly, Chennai

Conway lives charmed life

The turning point came in the 12th over, when Conway was handed two lifelines in two balls. First, he flicked Marco Jansen straight to short fine leg, only for Yuzvendra Chahal to spill the chance.

Then, trying an unconvincing ramp shot, Conway offered another opportunity, this time to Yash Thakur at deep third — and he too fluffed it. Despite this double reprieve, Conway failed to shift gears. His inability to find boundaries or rotate strike allowed the asking rate to spiral beyond control. By the time he reached his half-century — the joint-slowest of the season for CSK — the damage was done.
