0/12: Can Mumbai Indians end their opening blues in IPL 2025?

Since 2013, Mumbai Indians have lost their first game in every IPL season. That’s correct, MI have a 100% losing record in their opening matches since then. Their last opening-game victory came in the 2012 season against CSK, and ever since, they have faced disappointment in their first match of every IPL campaign.

Interestingly, despite this trend, MI have shown dominance in the IPL. In 2013, the very season they first won the title, they still lost their opening game. From there, they never looked back, becoming one of the most successful franchises. However, in recent seasons, things haven’t gone as well for them.

Now, IPL 2025 is here, and MI are set to play against CSK in their first game on March 23. Will they finally break the streak?

Mumbai Indians’ first-match results since 2013

2013 Royal Challengers Bengaluru Lost by 2 runs
2014 Kolkata Knight Riders Lost by 41 runs
2015 Kolkata Knight Riders Lost by 7 wickets
2016 Rising Pune Supergiants Lost by 9 wickets
2017 Rising Pune Supergiants Lost by 7 wickets
2018 Chennai Super Kings Lost by 1 wicket

Many things are at stake for Mumbai Indians. As mentioned, they haven’t had a good record in their first IPL game of the season. But more than that, their last few seasons haven’t gone as expected, and that’s something they need to sort out.

This time, they have a strong squad, and it will be interesting to see how things come. Also, it is important to note that their regular captain, Hardik Pandya, will not be leading the team in the first match. Instead, Suryakumar Yadav will take charge as captain.
