Five-time world chess champion Magnus Carlsen’s famous pair of jeans, which created controversy, have been sold for a massive price of Rs 31.5 lakh after a heated bidding battle online. The jeans became controversial when Carlsen wore them at the 2024 World Rapid and Blitz Championships last December.

The global chess body FIDE, has strict rules for the tournament, requiring players to wear formal pants and during the World Rapid and Blitz Championship, Carlsen had to leave the tournament in between because he showed up wearing jeans, which went against the dress code. When asked to change his jeans during the tournament, Carlsen chose to leave the Rapid competition mid-way as a form of protest. However, he later came back and won in the Blitz event. Last month, Carlsen decided to auction his controversial jeans, and pledged that the money raised would go to Big Brothers Big Sisters, a charitable organization.

Who bought Magnus Carlsen’s jeans?
Carlsen promoted the auction on Twitter, calling the jeans “The forbidden jeans – can now be yours.” He expressed the unexpected nature of selling his jeans for charity. On the e-commerce platform, the jeans were listed as “Chess Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen’s #JeansGate Jeans.” When putting his jeans up for auction, Carlsen had posted on X: “The forbidden jeans – can now be yours. I am auctioning my jeans. A sentence I never thought I would write. But here we are. All proceeds go to the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.” The identity of the person who made the winning bid remains anonymous.
