Thakur made a solid contribution with the bat in the IND vs SA first Test at Centurion, but found it difficult to make a difference with the ball, leaking runs at an alarming rate. He was replaced by Mukesh Kumar for the second Test, though India did not specify any injury at that stage.
“He has informed the MCA that he will take two more weeks to recover,” Ajinkya Naik, the Mumbai Cricket Association secretary, had told Sportstar before the start of the match.
Cricbuzz reported that the all-rounder did not get a clearance from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to play for Mumbai because of his recurring knee problem.
Notably, Indian batter Shreyas Iyer was also excluded from the Mumbai squad, with the middle-order batter leaving India to prepare for India’s upcoming five-match Test series against England.
