In a surprising move, Glenn Maxwell has stepped down from his role as captain of the Melbourne Stars following a lackluster performance in the recently concluded Big Bash League (BBL) season.
Glenn Maxwell, who led the Melbourne Stars for five years, reportedly informed his teammates about his decision after the team’s last regular-season match against the Hurricanes at the MCG.
The Melbourne Stars had a rollercoaster season, initially facing setbacks with three consecutive losses, followed by a brief resurgence with four consecutive wins. Unfortunately, the team’s fortunes took a downturn again with three successive defeats in the final matches, causing them to miss out on the BBL13 finals.

End of Glenn Maxwell era at Melbourne Stars
The decision to resign came after the Stars’ disappointing sixth-place finish in the season. Glenn Maxwell leadership tenure included reaching the BBL final in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons, where the team narrowly missed securing the title.
At 35, Glenn Maxwell, who still has two seasons left in his contract with the Melbourne Stars, expressed his commitment to contributing as a player and supporting the new captain, whose appointment is yet to be announced. The Stars, along with the Hobart Hurricanes, are the only two franchises yet to claim a Big Bash title.
This marks the end of an era for Maxwell captaincy, and the Melbourne Stars will be looking to regroup under new leadership for future campaigns. The resignation comes as part of a broader restructuring effort, and Maxwell’s focus will now shift to his individual performance in batting and bowling.
