The greatest name in the history of German football and one of the greatest in world football history, Franz Beckenbauer, died on Sunday night, aged 78. The cause of death was not reported. What is known is that Franz passed away in his sleep.
Only three managed to be world champions as both a player and coach. And Beckenbauer is among them. The others are Mario Jorge Lobo Zagallo, who died last Friday, and Didier Deschamps, coach of France.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce that my husband and our father, Franz Beckenbauer, passed away peacefully in his sleep yesterday, Sunday, surrounded by his family. We ask that we be allowed to grieve in silence and refrain from any questions,” says the Beckenbauer family statement.
In recent years, Beckenbauer had been suffering from many health problems. Problems that worsened after the death of his son, Stephan, in 2015. The former German player also did not handle well the accusations of corruption in the process of choosing the 2006 World Cup.
The Kaiser, as he was known, had a serious eye problem, in addition to heart problems and Parkinson’s disease.
As a player, Beckenbauer was very successful in the German team and at Bayern Munich, where he won three consecutive Champions Leagues (between 1973 and 1976).
