Unlucky Shaheen! Warner survives as Abdullah Shafique makes mess out of simple catch

AUS vs PAK 2nd Test: In a stroke of luck for Australian batter David Warner, Pakistan’s Abdullah Shafique let slip a golden opportunity by dropping a seemingly routine catch. Warner, only on two runs, edged a Shaheen Afridi delivery, presenting a straightforward chance to Shafique, who, unfortunately, failed to secure the catch at MCG.

Mark Waugh in the commentary box described this as “as easy a slips catch you’ll see.”

Mark Waugh didn’t mince his words, labeling it “easy” and emphasizing that it appeared as if Abdullah Shafique was fielding in the slips for the first time. Commentator Ian Smith expressed his disappointment, noting that Abdullah Shafique seemed to lose track of the ball, and it looked like an amateur attempt at a regulation slip catch.

Abdullah Shafique: A regular offender

This isn’t the first time in the series that Abdullah Shafique has faced criticism for a fielding lapse. During the Perth Test, he dropped a relatively straightforward chance off Usman Khawaja, prompting scathing comments from Mark Waugh again, who called it a “regulation” catch, even suitable for park cricket or under-10s.

The recent drop by Abdullah Shafique proved costly for Pakistan, as Warner went on to survive and continue his innings. Despite Pakistan having the upper hand in the first session, they failed to capitalize on opportunities, with no wickets to show for their efforts. Pakistan skipper Shan Mahood’s decision to bowl first after winning the toss seemed justified, given the favorable conditions that saw the ball swinging and nipping away from the Australian batsmen.

I watched Pakistan train last week. They dropped simpler catches than the one Abdullah Shafique put down. #AUSvPAK #BoxingDayTest

Reflecting on the missed chance, Kerry O’Keeffe from Fox Cricket noted during the drinks break that the first opportunity had to be taken, and the dropped catch felt like déjà vu, reminiscent of earlier missed opportunities in the series. The spilled catch added to Pakistan’s woes as they sought crucial breakthroughs in the Boxing Day Test.
